                                            Artifact Bag Reflection

I thought the artifact bag activity in class was very interesting. My group had a picture, a badge, a document, and a porcelain napkin holder. Each of these artifacts were relevant to Russia and Dr. Smirnova's life as she became a teacher. My group and I had to translate many of the writing since it was in Russian, which was difficult at times but also very interesting. We found out the picture was from a Russian pioneer summer camp and the badge and document were from when Dr. Smirnova went to a university for her degree in education and technology. The porcelain napkin holder is ver symbolic in Russia and it was given to her husband by her father as a symbol of father giving up her daughter to another man. I think all these artifacts represent Dr. Smirnova's life from being a young girl in Russia to getting her degree in education and technology in America, to finally marrying and starting a new life in America. In elementary school I never did anything like this so I found it very interesting and fun. I think it's a good way to get students involved in the lesson and learning about things hands on rather than reading slides and taking notes. Students can make personal connections to the artifacts and can confer with each other about how they feel these artifacts relate. Students can practice social skills as well as presentation skills when explaining their findings to the class. I really like this activity and will definitely keep it in mind when writing lesson plans for my future class!
