Climate Change

Climate Change Facts:
  • we operate as if the earth was a closed system in regards to matter
  • earth derives energy from nonrenewable resources
  • earth is an open system in regards to energy
  • we should derive our energy from the sun
  • Ale Gore "must we change" but real question is "can we change"
  • "how can we make change occur?"
  • atmosphere is gasses around our head, when we leave we are in outer space
  • troposphere
    • thin, atmosphere that we live in, concern do these conditions provide appropriate living conditions for us
  • stratosphere
    • gasses that are trapped above the troposphere that allow for the transfer of gases through the earth's system and provide boundary for temperature
  • the earth allowed enough heat in space to regulate itself
  • boundary between space and atmosphere thickens and warms up the earth and stops heat from leaving
  • we are dumping 110 million tons of manmade global warming pollution into the atmosphere every 24 hours which creates pollution in the atmosphere
  • green house gasses come from fossil fuels and the way we generate and get rid of waste
  • biggest sources of greenhouse gases
    • thawing permafrost, coal plants, coal mining, industrial processes, fertilization, land transport, oil production, air transport
  • anomaly - and unexpected deviation from the norm, unexpected
    • 2016 was the hottest year ever measured
  • every 34 years the population of earth doubled but is now slowing down
  • heat of the ocean has also increased
    • consequences: bleaching and killing coral reefs which takes away habitat for ocean life, storms and changes behavior in air over the ocean, heated air intensifies the storm and usually don't appear in the Pacific but are now
  • extra heat that evaporates more water from the ocean, causing bigger downpours and floods pulls moisture even more quickly from the soil causing longer and deeper droughts.
  • glacer melting causes more water to run into the ocean and the ocean gets higher which can cause flooding
    • New York is the 3rd citing at risk from sea level rise by 2070
    • only so much money to fix things so the question is what can be fixed and what can't
  • climate change will likely lead to food and water shortages, pandemic disease, disputes over refugees and natural disasters in regions across the globe.
    • climate change is a medical emergency
  • we are at risk of losing 50% of all land based species in this country because species are losing their habitat
  • what changes do we need to make?
    • wind and solar power and moving away from fossil fuels because it is killing us and the world
    • China is now producing more greenhouse gases than any other country
